In 2011 Surf For Life volunteer teams are heading to Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. Every
scheduled week a new team of volunteers is helping hands-on with construction and community projects benefiting the children of
Puerto Viejo and the indigenous BriBri tribe. Although Puerto Viejo thrives with
tourism, most local families live under severe conditions. Apart from poverty, medical
needs and illiteracy, the BriBri children have no way to attend Puerto Viejo’s
schools regularly since the remote mountain paths leading to town are often
impassable or flooded. Surf For Life is committed to helping volunteers
participate in meaningful social and economic development projects designed to
benefit the Bri Bri and the community of Puerto Viejo.
And now we need you to make them a reality!
Be part of this awesome opportunity to make a hands-on difference in the community of Puerto Viejo. Join us in the construction and remodeling of schools & community facilities, building bridges, maintaining trails and helping out with social services such as the local soup kitchen.

Surf for Life is currently working with the town of Puerto Viejo to plan out
the construction of their first proper high school. At this time the high school
students meet in the town community center, which is a historic hall built by
Marcus Garvey. The single large room is divided with temporary walls to
partition off class rooms. There are desks and chalkboards and very little else.
Surf for Life has already generated a first level of plans for the new 'green'
school on property allocated on the edge of town. We've partnered with architect
(and surfer) Matt Hollis to
take planning to the next level, and are currently gathering data about the job
site.
Surf for Life's spokesperson, Jaimal Yogis
- activist, journalist and author of
Saltwater Buddha
- is pledging one hundred percent of the author's
proceeds for the coming year to this school project. |
