Isla de San Cristóbal is a large island that has several different indigenous communities including the Ngöbe-Buglé. These subsistence farmers and fishers have a strong sense of their cultural identity. With an interest in community tourism, desire to better support their local businesses, and give visitors an opportunity for an authentic, culturally immersive experience, the community has asked Surf For Life to support the completion of a hostel to house future visitors and help create additional income.
Surf For Life funds help support the building of the community hostel. Volunteers will work side-by-side with community members to paint, landscape, decorate, and add the final touches to the hostel. Volunteer families will also have the opportunity to engage with local youth during their classes and extracurricular programs.
