Located in the South Pacific, the Kingdom of Tonga is a Polynesian archipelago comprised of 169 tropical islands. Haapai Youth Congress (HYC), a branch of the Tonga National Youth Congress serves the central island groups of the Kingdom of Tonga which consists of 25 communities.  HYC is the only youth organization in the Ha’apai Group and has been in existence for 26 years. In 2014, Cyclone Ian totally destroyed the HYC center. Since then, land has been allocated and planning has begun to build a new space to serve the young women and men of the Islands of Ha’apai.  This trip has the unique opportunity to enjoy whale watching.

Community and Project Description:

Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom made up of 3 island groups comprised of 177 islands in total, mostly uninhabited. The islands are covered in tropical rain forests, lined in white sand beaches, and surrounded by coral reefs and crystal clear waters where humpback whales migrate.

Surf For Life is teaming up with the Haapai Youth Congress (HYC), a branch of the Tonga National Youth Congress, to build a youth center on the island of Vava'u. In 2014, Cyclone Ian totally destroyed the HYC center. Since then, land has been allocated and planning has begun to build a new space to serve the young women and men of the Islands of Ha’apai. This completion of this project will provide employment for young people, a meeting and training space for youth and the community.
