Community and Project Description:

Punta Banco, located at the southwestern-most point of the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, has yet to be overrun by tourists and has long been a secret surfers' paradise. The tiny village has a population of about 200 people and is just three miles from the famous surf destination of Pavones. Known for its laid-back lifestyle, Punta Banco is a great place to mingle with locals. They take pride in their community and the surrounding wildlife.

The best known wildlife of the area is the sea turtle. Punta Banco is a study and conservation area for these turtles through the use of hatcheries for nesting, and patrolling to ensure they reach the ocean.  These efforts serves not only as biological preservation for the turtles, but is of socioeconomic value to the community as well.

The governing committee of Punta Banco, working with our community partners at Rancho Burica, have requested support to renovate their community building that includes a kitchen, medical offices, meeting space, and more. This space is critical to the well being of the community and in need of repair, painting, and improvement to the surrounding landscape. A central location within the community, it serves as the main area for their annual Turtle festival.

Surf For Life volunteers will have the opportunity to assist with daily baby turtle releases and participate in night watches to protect the eggs and the mama turtles looking to lay them. Additionally, there is a beautiful wave to surf and swim just steps from our accommodations.
