Earlier this year, Hope Corps and local partner Magnfic Rock Popoyo partnered to make some much-needed renovations to the Las Salinas School that included repairing the entire roof and rehabilitating some of the existing classrooms to make space for a music room for the preschool students. Phase one of this project was completed in July 2017. The staff, students, and Hope Corps volunteers identified the need to update the bathroom situation. Dont worry, this will be clean fun and by far the most pressing need for the entire school grades K-10. Big impact.
Location: Popoyo, Southern Nicaragua
Las Salinas de Nahualapa is an indigenous coastal community located along the south Pacific coast of Nicaragua. The town of Las Salinas boasts a population of over 4,000 people. Many locals seek employment in the booming hotel and hospitality industry, though the production of salt is still their largest commerce. Over the last 7 years tourism has grown about 70% nationwide, and specifically the Las Salinas coast has experienced an increasing amount of tourism fueled by the amazing surf the area has to offer.
The Las Salinas School was founded in 1940 catering only to children from 1st to 4th grade. Fast forward to present day in Las Salinas and you will find over 400 students in both elementary and secondary school. Secondary school students (equivalent of high school) attend classes in the morning while the elementary students come in the afternoon. Even with the split of students, the school still struggles coping with the increasing amount of students. In 2014, Surf For Life/Hope Corps volunteers built an additional classroom to accommodate the preschool students. And in 2017, our volunteers will return to the Las Salinas School to make more improvements to the school!
These necessary additions to the Las Salinas School that will not only benefit the students and teachers, but the larger Las Salinas Community.
